Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma Detroit Alumni Chapter History

In the fall of 1990, Bro. Warren Galloway, Jr., J.D. (Central Michigan University) approached Bro. Charles W. Williams, Jr. (Central Michigan University), about establishing a new alumni chapter in Detroit. This new chapter would consist of professional Sigma men from the entire metropolitan Detroit area and would complement the outstanding community service endeavors of Xi Beta Sigma Detroit Alumni Chapter. The main goal of this chapter was to give Sigma college graduates the opportunity to establish our organization as the “leading proactive community service group” in the African-American community.

Brothers Galloway and Williams were able to convince Bro. Dr. Angelo Gilmore (Western Michigan University) and Bro. Atty. Wayne Richards (Howard University) to join the initial efforts to develop the new chapter. Later, Bro. Victor Green (Western Michigan University), Bro. Dean Smith (Western Michigan University) (Deceased) assisted in this endeavor. These Sigma men would be the founders of the newly formed chapter.

A membership meeting was held for inactive Sigma men who wanted to be active with an alumni chapter that had a mission to change the face of Sigma in the Detroit community. Out of this meeting came the charter members, Bro. Melvin Towner (Central Michigan University), Bro. R. Jones (Pembroke State University), Bro. Fred George, Jr. (Central Michigan University), Bro. David Webster (Central Michigan University) and Bro. Edison McCrea (South Carolina State University).

On October 30, 1991, the chapter received its approved charter from Regional Director Bro. Charles Talbert as Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma, Metropolitan Detroit Alumni Chapter. The first elected officers were President Bro. Wayne M. Richards and Vice President Bro. Warren Galloway, Jr. On February 6, 1993, the first initiation ceremony was held, and three professional men were made Sigma Men, Bro. Nolan K. Moore (Wayne State University), Rudy Redmond, Jr. (University of Michigan), and David Ward (Lawrence Technological University). Finally, the ingredients were in place for a strong foundation that would allow Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter to flourish for many years to come in the Metropolitan Detroit community.

Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma Alumni Chapter has helped Phi Beta Sigma International Fraternity, Inc., establish a strong presence in the Metropolitan Detroit community as a pro-active community service organization. Since the chapter’s beginning, we have grown in strength and numbers and have remained committed to helping the Detroit area reach the rebirth it has been working so hard to achieve. We are rightfully called the “Renaissance Chapter”.

Alpha Alpha Beta Sigma is now one of five Alumni chapters in Metropolitan Detroit. The others are: Xi Beta Sigma, Nu Alpha Sigma Pi Rho Sigma, and Zeta Tau Sigma. Together, Phi Beta Sigma is doing outstanding work in the Detroit community.
